Ask us a Question

How much do I make as a Runabout driver?

Runabout drivers earn approximately $30-$40 per hour after tax and vehicle running costs. However, your earnings will depend on your individual expenses. The lower your expenses, the more profit you earn. For example, if you drive a fuel efficient vehicle you will have less petrol costs than if you drive a V8! This will also depend on your income tax rate, the cost of your vehicle insurance (shop around!), and your vehicle maintenance costs. How much you make also depends on how much you drive.

What certifications do I need to be a Runabout driver?

You need a Passenger endorsement on your driver’s licence and your vehicle must have a Certificate of Fitness. The cost of obtaining both of these is currently just under $150. You also need to ensure your vehicle insurance covers you for ride-share services. Note, this is not generally covered under standard insurance policies. You also need a Transport Service Licence. We will provide you with one of these at no charge.

Do I need a camera in my vehicle?

No. Runabout only accepts ride requests from registered passengers so under NZ law you do not have to have an in-vehicle camera. However, for safety reasons we recommend you have one.

Do I have to wear a mask while driving?

Yes. Under Covid-19 regulations ride-share drivers are required to wear masks while driving. Passengers are not required to wear masks.

What safety precautions do you have in place to protect drivers?

Your safety is extremely important to us therefore we have taken the following security measures:
  • All Runabout passengers must be registered through the passenger app before they can ride. We capture their name, address, and phone number.
  • Runabout does not accept any passengers that have not pre-registered.
  • We can blacklist passengers so they cannot book rides.
  • All payments are taken through the driver and passenger apps so you will never be required to carry cash.
  • We monitor your location at all times while logged into the driver app.
  • The driver app has a message feature so you can message Runabout in the event of an emergency.
  • The driver app has a silent alarm feature so you can discreetly notify Runabout if you are in trouble. We will be able to see when the alarm was activated, which driver and vehicle is involved, and the vehicle’s current position.
  • You are not legally required to have an in-vehicle security camera but this option is available to you.

How much do I get paid?

As at June 2021, Runabout drivers are paid 82% of the fare charged to the passenger.

How often do I get paid?

This depends on how long banks and the Stripe payment facility take to process customer payments. The customer pays through the passenger app. This payment is debited from their card and into the Stripe payment system. This process generally takes 3-4 days. Stripe will then make payment to your bank account. Stripe payments do not process on weekends so if we receive a payment from a customer it may take a week to arrive in your bank account after Stripe processing and the weekend has passed. We are currently working on improving this time frame so we can pay you as soon as possible.

Where do you operate?

We currently only operate in Wairarapa from Masterton to Featherston and all the nooks and crannies in between including Carterton, Greytown, Gladstone, Longbush, Martinborough, Lake Ferry, Western Lake, and Kahutara. If you would like us to operate further than this, please send us an email and let us know.
